SWAKOPMUND/ NAMIBIA - Meine besten Tipps für die deutscheste Stadt Afrikas
Swakopmund – an der Küste Namibias gelegen, wartet diese kleine Stadt mit so einigen Überraschungen auf, aber dazu später mehr. Swakopmund ist bei Touristen wie Einheimischen heiß begehrt: Die reichen Namibier aus Windhuek fallen zu jeder Möglichkeit in Swakopmund ein, um der Hitze der Hauptstadt zu entfliehen, oder einfach ein bisschen durch die Straßen Swakopmunds zu bummeln, die Ruhe zu genießen.
Wir als Touristen waren uns nicht sicher, was uns in Swakopmund erwarten würde und auch nicht, ob es uns gefallen würde. Man liest ja einiges: Die deutscheste Stadt Afrikas, das südlichste Ostseebad der Welt und vieles mehr. Wir wollten vor allem viel Zeit in der Natur verbringen, aber auch nicht nur für einen Tag hinfahren um dann am nächsten Tag wieder weiterfahren zu müssen. Während eines Urlaubs in Namibia sitzt man sowieso schon so viel im Auto! Deshalb haben wir uns für zwei Übernachtungen in Swakopmund entschieden und – Überraschung – wir haben es geliebt. Deshalb kommen hier meine besten Tipps für die Stadt selbst, Ausflüge im Umland sowie Wissenswertes zum Klima, der Stadt selbst, unserer Unterkunft und vieles mehr. Kommt mit mir nach Swakopmund!
Anreise nach Swakopmund
Von Windhuek oder Sossusvlei nach Swakopmund
Da Swakopmund bei quasi allen Namibiern so beliebt ist, ist die Stadt sehr gut angeschlossen: Über die A1 bis Okahandja und dann die B2 kann man von Windhuek aus die 360km in unter 4h nach Swakopmund fahren. Für namibische Verhältnisse kommt das einem Wunder gleich. Auf dem Großteil der Straßen, die nicht so gut ausgebaut sind und meistens nicht geteert sind, braucht man für 360km ca. 6-7h.
Die meisten Reisenden kommen jedoch von Sossusvlei, also vom Süden, nach Swakopmund. Das ist mit 400km und rund 5h Fahrt etwas länger, aber auch gut machbar. So haben wir es auch gemacht.
Zwischenstopp in Solitaire
Und wie wohl jeder Touri in Namibia haben auch wir in Solitaire angehalten und den berühmt berüchtigten Apfelkuchen dort gegessen. Das muss auch eine Goldgrube sein: Einmal einen Apfelkuchen verkauft, den die Leute wohl ganz gut fanden, jedem davon erzählt haben und jetzt steht dieser Apfelkuchen in jedem Reiseführer und überall im Internet und Gott weiß wo und jeder Mensch, der von Sossusvlei nach Swakopmund fährt – also literally jeder Namibia-Reisende und auch Tausende Einheimische, hält hier an und bestellt sich seinen Apfelkuchen. Fazit: Sehr lecker, vor allem mit Sahne und ein Schnapper. Wir haben für zwei Apfelkuchen, einen Blueberry Crumble und zwei heiße Schokoladen umgerechnet 6 Euro gezahlt.
Ansonsten ist in Solitaire – das seinem Namen alle Ehre macht – nichts los, da der Ort faktisch aus dieser Tankstelle mit Café besteht.
Kurzes Autobahn-Vergnügen
Die Straße von Solitaire nach Swakopmund verläuft am Rande des Namib-Naukluft Nationalpark, vorbei an faszinierenden, teils unwirklich anmutenden Landschaften, so dass die Zeit verfliegt. Auf dem letzten Stück, von Walvis Bay nach Swakopmund, kommt man dann sogar noch kurz in den Genuss der B2 und somit einer geteerten, vierspurigen Straße!
Klima Swakopmund
Einer der Gründe, warum Swakopmund so beliebt bei den Einheimischen und vor allem den Menschen aus Windhuek ist, ist das Klima. Während der Rest Namibias quasi das ganze Jahr über Temperaturen von 25°C bis 40°C im Sommer hat und unter der Hitze zu ächzen scheint, ist Swakopmund aufgrund seiner Lage am Atlantik mit sehr mildem Klima gesegnet. Das Thermometer steigt hier auch im Sommer selten auf über 25°C.
Die exponierte Lage am Atlantik ist auch der Grund, warum an den meisten Tagen morgens eine dicke Nebelschicht über der Stadt hängt, die sich erst im Laufe des Tages verzieht.
Für die hitzegeplagten Namibier eine Wohltat! Und auch für uns war das Klima nach 10 Tagen trockener, heißer Wüstenluft eine Wohltat! Das Nasenbluten und die trockenen Stellen im Gesicht haben sich innerhalb eines Tages in Swakopmund in Luft aufgelöst.
Ausrüstungs-Tipp für das mildere Klima in Swakopmund
- Faltbare Daunenjacke*: In Swakopmund, bzw. zumindest als wir dort waren, weht quasi konstant ein kühler Wind. Der beste Schutz dagegen ist eine windabweisende Daunenjacke! Die hier könnt ihr auch noch super platzsparend in jeden Backpack oder Koffer packen.
- Buff*: Ein Buff gehört wie gesagt bei jeder Reise zu meinen Essentials, weil es so vielseitig einsetzbar ist: Als Stirnband, als Schal oder als Schlafmaske!
Unterkunft in Swakopmund: Guesthouse Fischreiher
Das Guesthouse Fischreiher liegt etwas außerhalb, ca. 4km vom Stadtzentrum Swakopmunds entfernt, dafür nahe am Strand und in der Nähe des Einkaufszentrums „Platz am Meer“, in dem auch zwei unserer liebsten Restaurants – Blue Grass und Fisherman’s Kitchen – sind.
Für 25€ pro Person und Nacht, also nur ca. doppelt so viel wie eine Nacht am Campingplatz, bekommt man bequeme Betten, jeden Tag das Zimmer geputzt, sehr freundliche Mitarbeiter und sogar Frühstück.
Das sowieso jeder immer jeden Meter in Namibia mit dem Auto fährt, sind wir auch einfach morgens immer die 4km in die Stadt gefahren und haben in einer Seitenstraße geparkt.
Tipp: Es gibt an jedem Parkplatz Parkplatzwächter, die für ein kleines Trinkgeld von 5-10 NAD auf die Autos aufpassen, also muss man sich auch keine großen Sorgen machen, dass eingebrochen werden könnte.
Wie lange sollte man in Swakopmund bleiben?
Wir hatten 2 Übernachtungen in Swakopmund, also zwei richtige Tage und zwei Anfahrt-/Abfahrttage. Die Länge fand ich perfekt, um genug Zeit zu haben, alles zu erkunden und noch eine Tour ins Umland zu machen, ohne, dass es langweilig geworden wäre. Wenn ihr nur 1 Übernachtung in Swakopmund machen wollt, reicht das auch, um die Stadt selbst zu sehen, aber mit einer Tour ins Umland wird es eventuell etwas stressig.
Meine 6 besten Tipps für Restaurants und Cafés in Swakopmund
1. Blue Grass
Das Blue Grass ist eines der drei Restaurants, die immer genannt werden, wenn man online nach Restaurants in Swakopmund, gemeinsam mit The Tug und Jetty1905.
Wir fanden Blue Grass am besten, was das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis und den Service angeht. The Tug ist etwas fancier, aber meiner Meinung nach nicht besser. Generell haben eigentlich alle Restaurants in Swakopmund mehr oder weniger die gleiche Speisekarte, mit ein paar Variationen.
Das Blue Grass liegt im Shopping Center „Platz am Meer“, und ist bei Einheimischen mindestens genauso beliebt wie bei Touristen.

2. Fisherman's Kitchen in Swakopmund
Die Fisherman’s Kitchen ist genau wie das Blue Grass im Shopping Center „Platz am Meer“ gelegen, also direkt am Strand, aber etwas außerhalb vom Zentrum von Swakopmund. Es ist eher ein Imbiss als ein Restaurant, also vielleicht eher als Mittagessen als als fancy Abendessen! Der Fisch war aber der beste Fisch, den wir in Namibia gegessen haben und dazu war es noch sehr günstig.

3. Village Café - Eine Institution in Swakopmund
Das Village Café wird in gefühlt jedem Reiseführer erwähnt und zwar aus gutem Grund: Das Village Café ist eine richtige Institution in Swakopmund und bei Einheimischen mindestens genauso beliebt wie bei Touris. Sehr günstig (für deutsche Verhältnisse), sehr viel Auswahl über deftig zu süß, auch für namibische Verhältnisse viele vegetarische Alternativen, toller Vibe und wunderschöner Innenhof. Definitiv eine Empfehlung!

4. Ice and Spice
Ice and Spices ist eine echt gute Eisdiele, die sehr italienisch schmeckendes Eis verkauft und zwar die einzige, die wir in drei Wochen Namibia entdeckt haben.

5. Bojos Café
Kleines, süßes Café, mitten in der Innenstadt von Swakopmund. Es gibt u.a. selbstgemachten Kuchen und extrem leckeren Chai Latte und Heiße Schokolade. Empfehlung: der Oreo Brownie, 12/10!

6. Wild Rocket Café
Minimalistische Einrichtung, sehr leckerer Chai Latte und heiße Schokolade. Ich hatte die Rösti mit Spinat, Feta und Pilzen, was eines der besten Frühstücke war, die ich glaube ich je hatte. Der Service war nicht so gut und das Essen hat relativ lange gedauert, was aber auch daran liegen kann, dass das Café zu dem Zeitpunkt, als wir dort waren, noch recht neu zu sein schien. Ich würde es trotzdem weiterempfehlen, einfach, weil es so gut geschmeckt hat!

Meine 6 besten Shopping-Tipps für Swakopmund
1. Earthnique
Earthnique ist ein Laden, der wunderschöne Ketten, Ringe und Ohrringe mit echten Steinen im Angebot hat, sowie eine Auswahl an Souvenirs, Magneten, Tshirts, den geschnitzten Giraffen, die man fast überall sieht. Ich hab mir hier nach langem Überlegen eine Kette und Ohrringe gekauft
Eine Buchhandlung, die von einer deutschsprachigen Inhaberin geführt wird und eine Riesenauswahl aktueller deutscher Bücher im Angebot hat, aber auch Bücher aus der Kolonialzeit, in denen aus den Augen deutscher Kommandeure über die Hereroaufstände usw berichtet wird, Bücher in Afrikaans sowie natürlich englische Bücher. Auch von außen ist das koloniale Gebäude sehenswert!

3. Bead World
Bead World war ungefähr der coolste Laden, in dem ich lange war und vielleicht der coolste in Swakopmund für mich: Es gibt alle möglichen Perlen und man kann sich diese Perlen in allen möglichen Formen und Farben aussuchen, eine Kette aus Gold oder Metall oder sogar Strick, abschneiden lassen und danach eine Kette Selbermachen. Der Preis für die Steine dort ist unschlagbar. In Geschäften oder Märkten in Deutschland oder zumindest München kosten dieselben Steine und Perlen mindestens das zehnfache. Für alle DIY-Liebhaber und Perlenfans generell ein absolutes Must-Do in Swakopmund!

4. Made in Namibia
Kleiner Laden, der aber wirklich nur Produkte verkauft, die in Namibia hergestellt werden und somit lokale Künstler unterstützt, zu einem ähnlichen Preis wie an der Mole (dem Handscraft Market, den ich nicht empfehlen würde: viel zu teuer, viel zu viele, sehr aufdringliche Verkäufer, die zwar behaupten, sie würden die Sachen selbst per Hand machen, aber ziemlich offensichtlich alles von China oder Gott weiß wo herangeschifft wird.)

5. Nakara Swakopmund
Ein weiterer Laden in Swakopmund, der auf Lederprodukte und Fell spezialisiert ist. Ich habe mir dort eine nicht ganz günstige, aber wunderschöne und toll verarbeitete Tasche gekauft.
Tipp: Ihr könnt euch die VAT von 15% für fast alles am Flughafen zurückerstatten lassen: Dazu müsst ihr den Kassenzettel aufheben und am Flughafen einiges an Papierkram ausfüllen, bekommt dann eine Kreditkarte mit dem Erstattungsbeitrag in Euro drauf und könnt sie dann ca. 3 Monate nachdem ihr zurück in Deutschland seid, einlösen und das Geld abheben. Ein sehr wildes System, aber lohnt sich trotzdem für euch.

6. Deon Sibold
Lederwarengeschäft, das für seine Kudu- und Straußenlederprodukte bekannt ist. Straußenleder ist wohl das teuerste Leder, das es gibt, weil nur ein bestimmter, sehr kleiner Teil, des Tieres verwendet werden kann, und auch nur dann, wenn man die einzelnen Federn gut sehen kann. Die Taschen, die er verkauft hat, gingen bei 1000 Euro los, was aber für Taschen der Art, von Vila Moderna aus Südafrika, günstig ist. In Deutschland zahlt man laut ihm, und er war sehr vertrauenswürdig, den NAD Preis in Euro, also 20000 Euro. Sehr schöner Laden und sehr freundlicher Besitzer, der locker über 70 ist, aber immer noch sehr begeistert von dem, was er macht.

Ausflüge in die Umgebung Swakopmunds
Little Five Desert Tour
Die Little Five Desert Tour ist eine Tour, bei der man in die Wüste fährt und die kleinsten Lebewesen der Wüste, die man sonst nie finden würde, entdeckt und dazu dann noch ein paar Informationen erfährt. Man kann entweder morgens um 8 los oder Nachmittags um 14 Uhr. Sie dauert insgesamt ca. 4h. An sich ist die Tour ganz cool, weil man die Tiere, die einem gezeigt werden, sonst niemals in der Wüste ausfindig machen könnte: Ein Chamäleon, das zwischen einem Busch saß und ganz schwarz war, und somit quasi unsichtbar für das ungeschulte Auge. Auf meine Nachfrage hat unser Guide dann ein paar Würmer in seine Nähe geworfen, damit wir sehen, wie das Chamäleon jagt: Ganz langsam dreht er erst seine Augen in die richtige Richtung und läuft dann Schritt für Schritt auf seine Beute zu. Und dann, aus dem Nichts, schnellt seine Zunge, die genauso lang, wie sein Körper ist, hervor und fängt seine Beute ein, verschlingt sie und weiter gehts.
Außerdem haben wir noch eine Sandviper gesehen, die so gut getarnt ist, dass nur die Augen aus dem Sand schauen und sie eigentlich nur zu erkennen ist, wenn sie sich gerade bewegt. Wenn sie sich wieder vergräbt, führt sie wie eine Art Bauchtanz auf um sich dann von hinten nach vorne einzugraben.
Einen Wüstengecko, der komplett durchsichtig ist, bei dem man die Wirbelsäule und sämtliche Organe gesehen hat und der ultra schnell losgerannt ist, sobald man ihn losgelassen hat.
Und ein Skink, eine Blindschleiche sowie eine Schaufelnaseneidechse.
Am Ende sind wir einfach noch ein bisschen durch die Wüste gefahren, was ganz cool war, aber für uns, die ja schon in Sossusvlei waren, eher unnötig war. Alles in allem finde ich 40 Euro für das, was es ist – 5 Tiere in der Wüste finden, das, was man einmal auswendig gelernt hat, wiederholen und dann noch ein bisschen rumzureisen – zu viel. Es war sehr interessant, und vor allem, wenn man wie wir an einem Wochenende in Swakopmund ist, ist das eine gute Alternative, einen halben Tag zu füllen, jedoch in meinen Augen etwas zu teuer.
Fazit zu Swakopmund
Mir hat Swakopmund wirklich sehr gefallen, vor allem nach der langen Zeit in der Wüste und im Nirgendwo. Den Luxus, in ein Café gehen zu können oder essen gehen zu können, haben wir für zwei Tage sehr genossen. Länger als zwei Tage braucht man für Swakopmund in meinen Augen jedoch nicht – dafür bietet Namibia zu viele tolle Orte!
